Temporary Wildfire Waste Collection Site Now Open in Brimson

BRIMSON, Minn. — St. Louis Environmental Services has opened a temporary solid waste collection site in the Brimson area for residents to dispose of fire damaged materials.

The temporary transfer station is expected to handle scrap metal, burn debris, wood structures, shingles, brick and concrete.

Those items will be accepted free of charge. Liquids, trees and brush will not be accepted.

Proper disposal is crucial to prevent environmental damage from hazardous materials like propane cylinders and appliances with Freon.

The collected materials will be recycled or sent to the Virginia regional landfill.

“We’re hoping it’s very important to give people the options of getting rid of something relatively close so they don’t have to drive a long distance to get rid of the materials or dispose of them improperly by putting the woods or something like that,” John Struckel, Solid Waste Program Administrator for St Louis County said.

The collection site is located at the Old County Garage at 3115 Brimson Road.

The site is only for people affected by the wildfires. It is expected to remain open through the end of July.
