UWS Women’s Hoops Draws Whitman in 4th National Tournament Appearance
The Yellowjackets will try for their first-ever tournament win as they are currently 0-3 all-time in the national tourney.
SUPERIOR, Wis.- After a seven-year break, the UW-Superior women’s basketball team is heading to the national tournament once again.
On Monday, the team learned their seeding and their opponent.
UWS draws Whitman, who was the champion of the Northwestern Conference.
The Yellowjackets don’t have much familiarity with the Blues as they’ve never played against one another.
Head Coach Emily Carpenter says they’ll gameplan like they normally do, adding they’re also not worried that Whitman is essentially a faceless opponent.
“We go in, We don’t have I shouldn’t say we don’t have expectations but we’ve already proved that we belong in the national tournament. Whitman is probably the number one seed in that bracket of four. So going in as kind of that four seed, we have nothing to lose. We’re just going out there, playing an extra hopefully two games in the national tournament. I tell the girls all the time just playing essentially care-free. There’s no pressure on us or anything like that so let’s just go out and perform how we’ve been doing all year,” said Carpenter.
Overall, this marks the 4th time in program history UWS has made the big dance. But, it’s the first for seniors such as Elise Besonen.
“Bittersweet. We fought through a couple of tough years at the beginning of like my senior, like our grade, our careers. It was a little rough start that just kind of over the past few years we’ve really been getting closer and closer each time. So to be able to get a win in that conference tournament and get our bid it’s just everything we’ve worked for,” said Besonen.
Superior’s first round matchup against Whitman will take place Friday at 4:45 PM on the campus of UW-Stout.
