UWS Women’s Soccer to Clash with Carleton in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

This is the 4th straight season UWS has advanced to the national tournament.

SUPERIOR, Wis.- Like the UWS men’s soccer team, it was also selection Monday for the UWS women’s team as they are set to make their 4th straight national tournament after topping Bethany Lutheran four to nothing on Saturday in the conference title game.

The Yellowjackets will meet up with Carleton, who play out of the MIAC conference.

Surprisingly the two teams have never played each other in a regular season contest but they have scrimmaged against one another in recent years.

Head Coach Allison DeGroot said a previous connection has given her an idea of what to expect on Saturday.

“One of my former mentors. I coached at Augsburg under Mike Navarre and he’s now an assistant coach at Carleton. So he’s there and he’s an excellent coach that knows the game extremely well. I know it’s going to be a tough challenge and a tough battle. But I do think when I look at similar scores, similar opponents. The score lines and stat lines are decently similar and so I do feel really confident going into that match,” said DeGroot.

“As far as butterflies go, this is the most that I’ve ever had. This group has been the most special that’s forsure and I think getting to go out there with a team we’re confident in matching up against with 30 of my best friends, all the butterflies in the world,” added forward Niya Wilson.

The Yellowjackets and Knights begin battle on Saturday at 3:30 pm in Dubuque, Iowa.
