Proctor’s McPhee Ends Historic Season with State Title

Won 189-Pound Title with overtime victory

PROCTOR, Minn.- Friends, family and fans of Proctor-Hermantown wrestler Zak McPhee celebrated his return home following his state championship victory on Saturday.

McPhee won the 189-Pound Championship round in overtime, solidifying a perfect 53-0 season and his first-ever state championship.

“I pretty much knew the match was over as soon as I grabbed his ankle underneath, and it was two seconds later I had the takedown.” Recalls McPhee. “I didn’t celebrate much, but my head was going like ‘Wow, we did this. Finally.'”

In 2023, McPhee was the state runner-up after falling short in the championship round. He admits that loss was on his mind following Saturday’s match. “I didn’t think about it in a negative way. I’ve been here before. I know this crowd, I know the routine, and I think that also just helped me stay cool, calm and collected.”

McPhee will now focus on getting ready for the track and field season, along with finishing his senior year in high school. Following graduation, he’ll pursue a Pre-Med degree at UW-Eau Claire, where he’ll also continue his wrestling career.
