UMD Seals WCHA Quarterfinal Sweep, Facing Ohio State on Friday
Both goals scored by McMahon in game two
DULUTH, Minn.- The UMD women’s hockey team took care of business in the WCHA Quarterfinals, defeating St. Cloud State 2-0 in game two to complete the sweep.
As was the case in game tone between UMD and St. Cloud State, the first period in game two turned into a defensive showdown. Former Bulldog and current Husky goaltender Jojo Chobak gave her former team fits, making 10 saves and keeping this one scoreless at the first intermission.
But in the following period, her opposing goalie shined the brightest. In her first collegiate postseason start, Eve Gascon tallied 11 second-period saves, finishing with 27 in total.
With no goals scored and time winding down in the second period, UMD’s all-time leader in games played, Mannon McMahon, put her experience to good use by finding a crack in the Huskies’ defense with the game’s first goal.
Reinvigorated with a 1-0 lead, the Bulldogs entered the third period with newfound energy, and with the help of Grace Sadura, McMahon was once again able to deliver with her second goal of the afternoon.
After allowing no goals on their end, the UMD women furnished their second straight shutout, advancing to the WCHA semifinals for the sixth straight season.
The Bulldogs will now have a chance at redemption when they face top-seeded Ohio State. The Buckeyes defeated UMD in the same stage last season — and in all four of their regular-season matchups, Ohio State came out on top. That game will take place this Friday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
