Union Gospel Mission’s “Miles for the Mission” 5K draws over 100 people

DULUTH, Minn. — Over 100 people participated in the 2nd annual “Miles for the Mission” 5K, hosted by Union Gospel Mission.

The event serves both as a fundraiser and a symbolic journey, with the route intentionally mirroring the path many Mission guests take upon leaving the Mission. Scheduled for March, the 5K challenges participants with cold, slippery conditions, highlighting the difficulties homeless individuals face in winter.

“It’s just so reflective of, and I’m so grateful to live in a community that understands that this is so much more than just raising funds for Union Gospel Mission, it’s really just bringing awareness to the people we’re serving and the importance of caring about your neighbors,” said Union Gospel Mission Executive Director Katie Hagglund.

Money raised from the event directly supports the Mission’s meal program, outreach services, and housing initiatives.

Hagglund added, “this is a really tough time for folks, and it takes a community really rallying together and wanting to care for one another for us to get through these tough times. And so today is a good reminder that we have a really lovely community that we live in.”

The Mission has served the Northland for 103 years. In 2025, the Mission provided over 100,000 meals and expanded outreach efforts connecting individuals to treatment, shelter, and long-term housing solutions.
