Local gym offers tips for New Years Resolution fitness

SUPERIOR, Wis. — The New Years Resolution of getting to the gym has been one of the most common for years, and with the turn of the calendar, local gyms often see a spike in those looking to make good on their promise.

At Doc’s Gym in Superior, gym memberships typically rise dramatically during and directly after the holidays, before falling off once the weather gets warmer.

While people have their own reasons for not sticking with their resolutions, maintaining a consistent routine can greatly improve your odds of keeping your new year’s goal.

“Get yourself a consistent schedule, whether you’re coming in 4 days a week, 5 days a week, or even 3 days a week, just come in. Pick those days that you’re going to come in and hit it,” said the gym’s owner Nicholas Tucker.

“Half your battle is getting to the gym. Once you’re here, everything’s going to be downhill, whether you’re doing an hour workout four. 30-minute workout, or you’re here (for) a sauna, or tan, you’re coming in and you’re doing something.”

For the people that may be intimidated by the gym, Tucker says there is no better place to find other people just trying to do their best.

“People tend to forget that a gym is a community,” said Tucker.

“You’re going to be able to find tons of people in here who are in the same boat as you are, I know a boatload of people here have made good friends, and a lot of the ‘New Year’s Resolution’s’ too (have) found good friends here and stuck with it.”

Tucker also says that many of the area’s gyms have trainers on stand-by for those that might be brand new to the gym scene.
