Cloquet DWI Suspect headbutted Nurse at Hospital – Charges

CLOQUET, Minn. – A man arrested for DWI, is accused of also headbutting a nurse at Cloquet Memorial Hospital.

Kash Steven Ankarlo, 34, of Esko, is charged with offenses including fourth-degree assault on a hospital personnel, escape from custody, and child endangerment, in relation to an incident on July 3, in Cloquet.

According to court documents, Cloquet Police were called to Pinehurst Park for reports that a man, later identified as Ankarlo, appeared intoxicated and was walking towards a truck. The 911 caller told dispatch that they knew a child was also in the vehicle.

When an officer arrived, he approached the truck and reported smelling alcohol emitting from Ankarlo. A child was observed unbuckled in the back seat, according to the criminal complaint. Ankarlo agreed to field sobriety testing and then a preliminary breath test, which allegedly showed his blood alcohol content to be .229, or over two and a half times the legal limit.

Police decided to take Ankarlo to Cloquet Memorial Hospital to be evaluated after he attempted to wrap a seat belt around his neck. Ankarlo threatened officers that he would break their nose and jaw, before allegedly trying to kick and headbutt officers who were moving him into the hospital.

Court records showed that Ankarlo is accused of headbutting a nurse who was attempting to restrain him.

Cloquet Police said they left Ankarlo in Cloquet Memorial’s custody; however, they were called back to the hospital the next day (July 4) for a report that Ankarlo had left before being discharged. Police located Ankarlo walking on the sidewalk near the hospital and took him back into custody.
