UW-Superior Women’s Tennis Draws Hope in Team’s First-Ever National Tournament
UWS' match with Hope takes place Thursday on the campus of the University of Chicago.
SUPERIOR, Wis.- The UW-Superior women’s tennis team achieved history over the weekend, winning their first-ever UMAC conference title and advancing to their first NCAA tournament.
On Monday, it was the selection show as the Yellowjackets found out where they’re headed.
UWS is Windy City bound as they’ll match up with Hope in the first round, a team they have yet to see previously.
Head Coach CeeJay Schaffner says after getting close in previous years, it’s a euphoric feeling after finally being able to get the job done.
“This is the ultimate goal kind of for the program from a competitive standpoint. To see it pop up up there after some okay seasons, some good seasons and this season being really great. So it’s years in the making and not just starting this fall but many falls ago. Just seeing their hard work pay off over the years has been amazing. This year specifically just record breaking in many senses, rewriting the record books individually and as a team, it’s been really cool just to see their hard work pay off,” said Schaffner.
UWS has been on quite the tear, winning their last 10 games. Junior Brooke Wilfong says they plan on relying on the things that were able to get them to this point.
“CeeJay likes to say no expectations, so just kind of playing and giving it our all and just kind of seeing what goes from there. Just cheering for each other and having that support system on the court when you are alone. Just knowing that your team is behind you as well, that’s kind of what we’ve been doing and it’s been working. We’ll just keep doing that I think,” added Wilfong.
