UWS Men’s Soccer Draws North Park in 1st Round of NCAA Tournament
The Yellowjackets are making their 7th national tournament appearance in eight years.
SUPERIOR, Wis.- Another year and another NCAA tournament berth for the UW-Superior men’s soccer team as the Yellowjackets clinched an automatic bid on Saturday, defeating Bethany Lutheran 6 to 2 in the UMAC title game.
Monday, the NCAA selection show for division three took place and the Yellowjackets learned they will face North Park in the first round.
The Vikings play out of the CCIW conference and are one of the at-large teams to make the tournament.
Head Coach Joe Mooney said he’s familiar with the C-C-I-W and added it’s like looking in the mirror when comparing the teams.
“We know that conference pretty well and I will tell you if you’re in the top half of that conference, you have a shot at doing something special in the NCAA tournament. So we know they’re going to be very good. I mentioned kind of their play style, lot of international guys, it’s this eclectic style of play and again in some ways it’s very similar to us,” said Mooney.
“We’ve kind of had this team brewing for the past two years now, with a lot of the same guys. We’ve only had like 4 or 5 guys go leave because they were seniors in the past two years. So, having this group of guys that we’ve been able to build off of the past few years has helped us a lot,” added forward Jake Kidd.
The Yellowjackets are making their 7th national tournament appearance in eight years. (2020 tournament canceled due to COVID)
Their contest against the Vikings is scheduled for 1:30 PM on Saturday at St. Olaf.
