DULUTH, Minn. — The American Legion Post in West Duluth is typically closed on New Year’s Day, but this afternoon they opened their doors to the public for some drinks and fun.

Everyone was invited to enjoy Bloody Mary’s and Walking Tacos, but the main draw was the Pull Tab Racing, according to House Chairman Bob Stephens. People lined up to purchase one dollar tickets and root for the animated horses, pigs, and more.

“As you can see people come out for this,” said Stephens. “This is like our third time doing it and it’s starting to spread. People enjoy watching, it’s actually kind of funny.”

The American Legion’s mission is to enhance the well-being of veterans, their families, and their communities. Member Amanda Paszak says even though she’s blind, the pull tab races are a fun, immersive experience.

“I’m not a veteran myself, but I would imagine, having my own specific disadvantage, it’s nice having people with similar situations to talk to,” Paszak said. “So I would think, having an American Legion where there’s other veterans who know what you’ve been through and can understand you more than anybody who hasn’t, would probably be a good place to come.”

The West Duluth American Legion has nearly one thousand members. They are open for applications and encourage veterans and their families to stop by and join.
