Vacant Superior Council Seat Goes To Elm
City Council Members Vote Tylor Elm To Seat With A 7-2 Vote.
Superior, Wis.
After more than a month of emotions, anger and frustrations the Superior City Council has turned a new chapter involving the open council seat Graham Garfield resigned from.
Garfield who is facing those serious charges of domestic abuse. The council chambers were packed mostly with support for Tylor Elm who the council ultimately appointed tonight seven to two.
Something you don’t see often at Superior Council meetings. Elm is a Superior business owner. The only other candidate to file, Kara Schmidt Is the chair of the Douglas County democrats.
Here’s what they said before the vote.
”With revitalized housing, job opportunity, a robust and diverse economy and the same community are what I’m here to fight for. I ask you to consider me as the right candidate for this position.” says Elm.
“My civic engagement has extended past my involvement at UWS. I have been serving Superior and North-west Wisconsin through Superior Days for the last 5 years. I’ve advocated at the state for fighting for more votes, an improved 911 system, better mental health funding, and our amazing public school and of course Better City Superior.” says Schmidt.
Schmidt is the former fiance of Graham Garfield who is the alleged victim in the domestic abuse case against him.
The council made the decision earlier last month to appoint a councilor through this application process instead of holding a special election or leaving the seat vacant.
Elm will hold this seat until April. That’s when a regular election will take place for the council seat.
