3 Hibbing Families Displaced By Fire

The Hibbing Fire Department responded at 0854am to a report of a basement fire.

Fire crews arrived on scene to smoke showing from the back of the structure. The structure is a 2 story 4 unit apartment complex. Fire crews made an offensive attack and encountered heavy fire from the basement of the building. Fire crews also noted some fire in the walls on the first floor. The fire was officially declared out at 1142am.

The building sustained fire, smoke, and water damage with current damage estimates at $140,000. Three of the four apartments were occupied at the time of the fire, displacing 3 families. The American Red Cross is assisting.

The property is insured and 2 of the 3 renters have renters insurance. A reminder that if you are renting a home or apartment, you are not covered under the property’s insurance. If you want your personal belongings covered in the event of a fire or disaster, you need to purchase renters insurance.

Two of the four apartments had working smoke alarms. Two of the apartments had disabled some or all their smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Hibbing Fire Marshal and State Fire Marshal’s office. The origin of the fire was the basement of the structure.

There were no reported injuries at this fire.

The fire containment was successful in part due to the great mutual aide response from the neighboring fire departments. Chisholm Fire, Virginia Fire, Keewatin Fire, Cherry Fire, Buhl Fire, Fayal Fire, Hibbing Police Dept, Hibbing public utilities, Hibbing Public works, and State Fire Marshal’s office responded to assist on this call.
