Superior Diversity Forum
They hoped to find some answers to some very difficult diversity questions.
University of Wisconsin Superior students are focused on how to fix a lack of diversity in the Northland.
Through a community forum, they hoped to find some answers to some very difficult questions.
The students found that diversity in Superior is primarily isolated to the universities but doesn’t extend beyond campus.
The sociology of Superior class interviewed 23 community members on how the city can improve upon its lack of diversity.
Different speakers reflected on how they felt they were treated.
Students called the entire experience intense, but something they want to continue through research.
“If we can get the community together and understand different cultures, then we can grow as a community and hopefully one day we can start keeping college students in town,” said student D’Andre Robinson.
“We’re kind of hoping we get a big slice of everybody in Superior to have a conversation with each other about what is really a tough and uncomfortable thing to talk about but as we know is also a pressing social problem,” said assistant sociology professor Meg Krausch.
Many of the students added the forum and interviews were eye opening. They said they’re proud that this type of work can go way beyond the classroom and possibly help an entire community.
