The USDA is working an initiative to get schools to commit students to growing fruits and veggies and incorporating it into science classes.

The project is called Farm to School. Lincoln Park Middle School is an example of the program.

The under secretary for the USDA was there Thursday to take a tour of their garden. He says the project has many benefits for students.

“We see it as both, supporting farming, knowledge, agriculture but also nudging people, students in this case in the direction of eating healthier,” said USDA Under Secretary Kevin Concannon.

Lincoln park recently received two USDA farm to school grants and has been involved with the project for three years.
