UPDATE: Three Canoeists Rescued in Boundary Waters

A multi-agency rescue ended with three canoeists being airlifted to an Ely hospital Tuesday.

Authorities were called just after 1 p.m. for four canoes that had gone over Basswood Falls in the Boundary Waters.

At one point, a child was pinned under a log in the water, according to Lake County authorities.

All three were rescued safely by helicopter.

Authorities said the child has a possible ankle fracture and hypothermia.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office did not have the victims’ names or immediate conditions as of Tuesday night.
