When Lake Superior Zoological Society president John Scott spoke to the public earlier Monday morning, it was less of an update on how the zoo is doing and more of a reassurance he and his team are still weighing the options in front of them.
“An opportunity is in front of us. And we want to be part of that process,” Scott said.
Those with the Society are trying to remain optimistic about the future of the zoo, which is showing its age.
“There was a lot of good discussion with the city last summer about more North American and more Northern Hemisphere sort of animals that are in our climate,” Scott said. “We’d love to continue on with that conversation.”
Scott recognizes the investment needed to upgrade the zoo, and the reality that changes are likely on the way soon.
“It’s financial. It’s also physical,” he explains. “There hasn’t been a significant investment since the flood almost three years ago now.”
As for a time table on when a decision will be made based on the options on the table, John Scott says he and the Zoological Society will wait for a decision from the City of Duluth.
